Microsoft is borrowing many popular features from Firefox and Safari in the release of Internet Explorer 8. Although it is originally intended for developers, the beta is public and should be utilized with caution. In the latest release of Internet Explorer, the Safety Filter exists and an antiphishing portion of the browser. In this beta, version 8 adds malware prevention that actively scans a downloading page for some malicious codes and content. Another feature that was borrowed is Web Slices that allows you to create applets on your desktop with snippets from live websites similar with Apple Safari. After downloading Internet Explorer 8 beta and you think you don’t like it, you can click on the Emulate IE7 button to have the old version back.

One of the best features of Flicks is its Camera Finder which lets you see what other people’s shots look like by using a particular model. This can be really helpful in figuring out if you basically need to get some new hardware or if you need to take a photography class. Video host Vimeo is a manual process that has a way to view which camera a user has although it is only through tags. If Flickr can find a way to make metadata more of like the equation, it could certainly produce some of the charts and graphs more appealing. Metadata for video clips though are all over and that could be the problem.

Splashup which was formerly known as Fauxto is very similar to Photoshop. It is a layer-based with lightweight editor just like offline editor Paint.net that is able to pull in images from Flickr, Facebook or any URL you specify. In editing, the idea here is same with the basic Photoshop-style image editing instead of specifically photo-related retouching. Meaning, there is no control over exposure and touch-up options like red-eye removal or face-retouching. Sliders control the effects which can be previewed in your image as you fiddle with the sliders. All in all, the layers and effects are impressively powerful but it could have been better with a photo-retouching control.

Adobe opened an online community with a word-processor, file storage and sharing, and deep tie-ins to a new Acrobat 9 enabled with Flash. This is a bold move for something that is best associated with the free and omnipresent Acrobat Reader that opens ready-print portable document format like PDF files (which will now play movies). The free Acrobat beta includes the Buzzword word processor with its ConnectNow Web conferencing desktop sharing tool allows chatting through text, video and voice. Users can also store files on Acrobat.com beta and join each other on virtual meeting rooms to share similar document views in real time. The said site will also host data from forms formed in Acrobat software. Its security was enhanced that allows users to add 256 bit encryption used by online banks to PDF.

The Can Spam Act (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act) of 2003 allows courts to sue spammers for up to $2 million in damages if they violate certain rules. This Act requires that businesses clearly label commercial e-mail as advertising, use a non-misleading subject line, provide a legitimate e-mail address and physical address, and process opt-out options within ten days. There are those who believe that high penalties will discourage spammers. However there are many weaknesses to this act, including the fact that spamming is a world wide problem and it is very difficult to enforce the act upon the internet.

The ‘do not call’ list is a list of phone numbers in the United States that telemarketers are not allowed to call. This is maintained by the Federal Trade Commission and consumers can contact the agency to register their numbers. When telemarketers call a number that is included in the list, they are fined. However if a consumer has a pre-existing relationship between a political organization, charity, surveyor or company, these calls are allowed although rules must be followed. The registration is effective usually three months after you apply. After this, telemarketers can call to take surveys or donations but they can never sell.

A live demo of mobile WiMAX was successfully presented by Motorola at a sold out trade show in Singapore this week, not long after it announced completion of a successful trial of the technology in Thailand.
Show-goers taking a bus tour at the WiMAX Forum Congress Asia reportedly experienced Web browsing, video conferencing, and other wireless applications while moving past Motorola 400 access points (APs) along the route, with mobile hand-off between the APs.
