Jjot: note (taking) worthy app

Being a blogger, you can’t help but take notes while surfing the web. It’s a great boon then, that Jjot exists and has given me a reprieve from taking my hands off the keyboards.

Jjot is a lightning fast sticky note web application filled with smart features like archiving, search, and sharing. Jjot is very easy to use and understand (which is nice when you’re tackling any new web application), but what really stands out about Jjot is its speed. Everything you do on Jjot is satisfyingly snappy, which is so refreshing in an age of bloated web apps. Granted, Jjot’s speed might not be enough to make it stand out in the already overcrowded online note-taking and todo applications, but it’s on my good list.

UsernameCheck is Watching You!

UsernameCheck is for the users who are akin to subscribe to every service that comes in the internet every few weeks or months, and tries to secure their customized their usernames. And if one day that service becomes popular, you will have your very own unique and cool username all for yourself. How it works is pretty simple. All you have to do is provide your preferred username and the program will then ping around 45 services available and then return with a result of whether that name is available to all the services that it has pinged. It will say either taken or available. Its that simple. If the name you typed in is taken, it can not tell you whether the owner is you or anybody else. It just works in Firefox. Hopefully developers can come up with an update so it can work across different platforms.

iGoogle and the giant widgets

iGoogle, which is Google’s personalized home page has a new update where widgets on the page can now be viewed in the newest canvass view. It simply enlarges the widget to the full iGoogle window. Sixteen new and updated widgets that are promoted by Google currently support the said feature. Currently, there are around 40,000 widgets available in iGoogle. It has not stopped on displaying standard small widgets. Whats new also is the fact that the larger views will not be restricted of ways to earn from them through monetization schemes. Developers can certainly do whatever they see fit for the pages. But in the smaller view, Google does not allow advertising and other direct profit generating schemes. iGoogle’s widgets were written in the Open Social platform. So there must not be much of a problem running this on the portal page.

E-ticketing

e-ticket.jpg

Technology does play a lot in making life more convenient. I’m sure many globe trotters out there are familiar with the e-ticket, which is an electronic document used for ticketing passengers most prominently in commercial airlines. For those who are not so familiar with this electronic service, I’ll give you a short run-down of what it’s all about.

What basically happens is that a customer books a flight through an airline’s Web site or through phone. The following details are then assigned to the customer: confirmation number, flight number, date, departure location, and destination location. Although a hard copy can be requested to be sent by postal mail, one only needs to bring identification to be presented upon boarding.

This way, printing and mailing costs of airline companies are significantly reduced. This also reduces incidences of lost or forgotten documents.

BitTorrent

netapp3.jpg

I love this application! Seriously, but Im not getting into the details of that lest I get into trouble if you know what I mean.

Anyway, what BitTorrent is, is basically a content distribution protocol written in the Python language by Bram Cohen under open source license. It enables efficient software distribution and peer-to-peer sharing of very large files by enabling users to serve as network redistribution points. Talk about cooperation. What it does is to share bits and pieces of the file among many customers until everyone is happy with a complete download. This makes it possible to share your file with many other people without individualizing downloads. Most of files on torrent are entire movies (without splitting them up into parts) and TV shows.
